Annual Weed Control Program Announcements
The McCormick Ranch Property Owners’ Association, Inc. (MRPOA) conducts an annual program to control weeds in common areas throughout the Ranch and in the City of Scottsdale medians, encompassing both turf and desert landscaping. Our goals are to manage noxious weeds, ensure safe and healthy turf, and protect trees and shrubs. During this period, olive trees will also be treated to prevent olive production.
Control Measures
Control measures include mechanical trimming, hand removal of weeds, and the application of herbicides. The herbicide treatment includes a light green dye, which is added to the solution to visually indicate where the product has been applied. This coloring helps ensure even coverage and prevents over-application by making treated areas easily identifiable. Starting Monday, October 7, 2024, all decomposed granite (desert landscaping) areas will receive treatment. Spraying will begin in the northern Ranch (Paradise Park Trails) and progress southward throughout the week, concluding in the Paseos (Paseo Village).
Safety Precautions
The EPA has approved all herbicides used by our association contractors. Current registration numbers are:
– 53883-429 (Pre-emergence control of grass and broadleaf weeds)
– 34704-120 (Control of broadleaf weeds in turf and non-crop areas)
– 81880-1-10163 (Control of nutsedge and other weeds in turfgrass and landscaped areas)
These herbicides will be applied under the supervision of licensed, bonded, and insured contractors. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information is available at the MRPOA office.
Timing of Treatment
Herbicide applications will be conducted in the early morning or mid-day when winds are typically light. The exact times and dates of treatment will depend on weather conditions and wind direction.
Watch for Signs
We advise residents and visitors to avoid newly sprayed areas for 48 hours after treatment. Signs will be posted at major public entrances to indicate that herbicide application is in progress, and these will be removed when it is safe to re-enter the area.
If you or anyone in your household is sensitive to chemical sprays and lives near the Ranch common areas that are treated annually, please email admin@mrpoa.com with your contact information to register for notifications regarding spraying in your area, or to request that the Board establish a no-spraying zone in specific areas.
